Kensington Quiz (Vol 7)

Now I have no clue what was here before Carvel. I know Carvel opened in 1971 or so, but if anyone knows what was there before Carvel please let us know.

I'm not 100% sure, but in the late 50s, I think there was a luncheonette there. I had a friend who lived above it, but I'm not sure if it was on E. 3rd or E. 2nd. The apartments look very familiar and the entryway to Carvel looks like the entry to the luncheonette. I have a picture somewhere. If I can locate it I'll check it out and try to send it to you

It's hard to believe that they were able to put a food related business in were there was a dry cleaner before. That shit would never fly today. They shut down Sabbaros in Port Washington for the same reason six years ago.

If my memory serves me correctly, I think that there were two stores there: (1) a shoe store on the corner and (2) a small jewelry store next to it. Next to the Carvel was a meat store but it was called M&S Meats.

I just asked my parents about this - my mom moved to E3rd in the 50s - they confirm that a shoe store was on the corner before Carvel.

Yes, it was a shoe store. Now I remember it well. It had one of those kind of x-ray machines for your feet.

There was definitely a shoe store there in the '50s. It was where I used to get my Stride Rites! Yes, my feet were x-rayed many times, too!

Since I live on that block it was a shoe store. I don't remember the name of it though but I remember buying my first pair of Keds sneakers.
