A Winter's Repeat

This is a repeat from last year...

Here are some photographs that were given to me by Will Roll, (a loyal reader) By the looks of them they were all taken around East 8th around Caton Avenue sometime from 1979 to 1987. Here are just a few, I will be posting more in the future.
Please note the little kids playing in front of their house with no parents in sight. Yeah, that was the Kensington that I remember too.
Thanks again Will!

Ron, thanks for reposting these photos, at least two other people in these pictures are regular readers of this blog, Mark S. and Mike D.I hope some more people see these from the old block and write in. I wonder if that kid invented the first snowboard when he took the trucks off his skate board? Will Roll

Will I spent a lot of time around there. I was good friends with Jimmy Quinlan. I knew Joe and Bobby Ball who lived in the Caton Towers. There was a Billy Gallagher that lived there and of course on the corner you had the the Gormans. One of my fondest memories is the "parachute jump" where you would jump off the concrete ledge leading to the underground garage of the towers and then grab one of the small trees, while in mid-air, which let you down relatively easy. Did you guys do this? Spinner

Hi Spinner, I am also a regular follower of your blog, and I must say you do some nice writing. To answer your question about the garage ramp at the Caton Towers, what didn't we do with that ramp! yes we jumped off the retaining walls, we drove every home made go cart down the ramp, only to be chased by that pain in the ass attendant troll that presided down there, and when we found abandoned tires, we would roll them down there and they would crash into the door to scare the shit out of him! I knew all those you mentioned very well. Joe Ball was a close tie with Sean Gorman for the straight jacket award, Jimmy Quinlan was in Brooklyn Tech while I was there, but I think he stayed, he must have transfered to another school. Good to hear from you, if you have any pictures from then, put them up, I'd love to see them, Will Roll

Great pictures! I played in many of those stickball games on Friel. Right on that corner is where the older guys(and if I'm calling them older, you could imagine how old they were!)would open the fire hydrant on theh really hot days, when it wasn't frowned upon. I think I was still living on Church Avenue at the time. That would make it pre 1970! Shit, I'm old! Love the skitching(is that how you spell it?)shots. We used to skitch behind the B16 on Caton Avenue, although the big trucks had better grips. And of course, a classic Ryan's picture. I'll leave the Ryan's stories and where that lead to another day.I will say though, that the last two Championship Trophies from from the East 5th Street Softball League were won by the Ryan's squad lead by your's truly. The Trophy has recently been returned to it's proper resting place (Shenanigans/Ryans).Thanks for the pictures! Pete Pabon
